Responsibilities of a professional driver

A truck driver is faced with an extensive range of duties, the meticulous fulfilment of which affects the safety, punctuality and smooth execution of the transport. The duties of a professional driver can be divided into several stages.

Preparing for transport

Before setting off on the route, the driver must carefully prepare for transport.

This activity involves collecting and organising necessary documentation, including personal documents, means of transport documents, cargo documents and other documents specific to the goods being transported.

Loading

During the working day, the driver is involved in or supervises the loading and unloading process, depending on the transport contract. It is the responsibility of the truck driver to ensure the safety of the transported cargo from the moment of loading until the moment of unloading at the destination. In addition, any discrepancy detected must be accurately recorded on the consignment note.

Loading-related tasks of a truck driver include:

  • receiving the load at the indicated place according to the agreed deadline,
  • supervising the load,
  • familiarising himself with the condition and type of cargo.

In the event of any discrepancies between the actual condition and the information contained in the consignment note or goods specification, the driver is obliged to include these issues in the CMR document. It is also advisable at this point to notify the supervisor of the situation.

Transport and unloading

Unloading is another task of a professional driver. While unloading, the driver supervises the unpacking of the goods, trying to verify the condition of the transported items. The final stage of this procedure is to obtain confirmation of receipt and, if necessary, carry out final customs clearance or draw up a damage report. In a situation where unforeseen difficulties arise, the driver is obliged to notify his supervisor immediately.

Documentation and accounts

Every route requires a careful report, presenting both the situation on the road and a summary upon return to base. At the end of the route, the driver must compare his or her notes with the documents taken, as well as a report on accident situations and fuel settlements. In addition, according to the duty, the driver is obliged to tidy up the cabin and load area. During this stage of the job, everything is finalised through the handover activity.

Vehicle reliability is the most important element for safe transport. The driver is also responsible for keeping the vehicle in good technical condition, which includes regular checks, repairs and taking care of the technical documentation.
