Avoid unnecessary stressful situations and know the applicable speed limits for trucks: speed limits on highways, expressways and two-way roads. Find out what fines and penalties for speeding currently apply to truck drivers in Poland and why road safety is not just about the correct speed.
Speed limits on Polish highways
The maximum speed limit on Polish highways is 140 km/h for both cars and trucks up to 3.5 tonnes. If you plan to drive a much heavier truck, other speed limits apply. On motorways and two-way roads, you can drive up to a maximum of 80 km/h. However, bear in mind that the appropriate speeds can sometimes vary, due to current traffic conditions. Before a long drive, you should also check the technical conditions of your vehicle.
Minimum highway speed
Minimum highway speed is not specified in the regulations or set in advance, but it is worth paying attention on the motorway if you prefer to drive more slowly. Certainly remember that you must not obstruct other road users from driving safely on the road. Set a limit that does not negatively affect other drivers.
Highway speed limit
In Poland, the speed limit on the highway is 140 km/h for passenger cars. Trucks with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tons can travel on the highway at 80 km/h. Exceeding the speed limit on the highway carries a fine.
Speed limit applicable on other roads
Depending on the type of road you plan to travel, the speed limits are different. On standard single lane two-way roads, travel up to a maximum of 90 km/h. If you are driving a truck, you are subject to a speed limit of 70 km/h on such a road. On roads outside residential areas - dual lane (separated by a green belt) two-way roads, with at least two lanes dedicated to each direction of traffic, do not drive faster than 100 km/h. If you are a truck driver, you can drive a maximum of 80 km/h on such roads.
Speed limit applicable on expressways
The maximum speed you can travel on expressways is 120 km/h. On single-lane expressways it is 100 km/h. For a truck driver, the maximum speed limit is 80 km/h on dual and single lane expressways. This is slightly lower than the speed limit on the highway.
Additional speed restrictions
Be alert! The road administrator may introduce additional speed limits on a section of a highway or expressway. The additional limit may be marked with a traditional sign, a light sign or specified on a prismatic board. Compliance with the restriction is not a suggestion, but an obligation.
Interestingly, raising the speed limit with a sign does not apply to truck drivers. For example - in a built-up area where we have a limit of 50 km/h, even if the speed is raised with a sign, for example, to 70 km/h, the speed of the truck continues to be limited to 50 km/h.
Speeding tickets
Speeding fines, and thus the penalties associated with the offence, vary depending on how badly you have broken traffic laws.
- If you exceeded the speed limit by 10 km/h you may pay a fine of PLN 50.
- When you decide to drive 11-15 km/h too fast, you will pay 100 PLN.
- Speeding over 20 km/h will cost you 200 zlotys.
The more you exceed the speed limit, the price you will have to pay - becomes higher. In the case of 40 km/h, for example, it is already 800 PLN.
There are changes in regulations from time to time, so check the current restrictions regularly.
Speeding fines and driver's licence
A fine is not everything. Penalties for speeding are also sometimes severe. If you have had your driver's licence for more than a year, the maximum number of points you can accumulate is 24. Remember that earned speeding penalty points accumulate with each offence.
Losing your driver's licence involves losing your job, so it's always a good idea to keep an eye on the rules.
